The Field Gets Bigger. So Does the Game.
Eleven is one of those ages where baseball takes a noticeable step forward. The pitching distance increases from 46 feet to 50 feet, and the bases move from 65 feet to 70 feet. Those don't sound like big changes, but players feel them immediately — and the game looks noticeably different as a result.
COYBL lists around 30 teams at 11U, but that number understates the actual options available to Central Ohio families. At this age, more programs begin stepping outside the traditional league format to focus on tournaments and independently scheduled games.
What Changes at 11U
The field opens up. The move to 50x70 dimensions is significant. Pitchers who relied on pure velocity at 46 feet now have to throw from farther out, which levels the playing field somewhat while also rewarding kids who have developed real mechanics. Batters have a little more time to read pitches. The game slows down slightly in the best way.
The running game changes. The stolen base festivals that define 9U and 10U start to calm down at 11U — at least a little. The extra five feet between bases makes a difference, and the better catchers at this level are beginning to develop the arm and technique to control the running game. You'll still see aggressive baserunning, but you'll also start to see real consequences for poor jumps and bad decisions on the bases.
Bodies start to diverge. Most 11-year-olds are still firmly in the "kid" phase, but a handful will hit an early growth spurt this year. The physical differences between players can start to become noticeable on the field. The best coaches understand that development at this age is uneven and don't over-index on the kids who are physically ahead of the curve. Early development is not the same as long-term potential. The best coaches understand this.
Tournament play grows. Many 11U programs in Central Ohio shift their focus toward tournaments and self-scheduled games rather than a traditional league calendar. This gives teams more flexibility in how they structure their season but also means more variation in schedule intensity from program to program. When you're evaluating teams, ask specifically how many weekends they plan to play and what the travel radius typically looks like.
What to Look for at 11U
The fundamentals of choosing a team don't change much from 10U, but a few things deserve extra attention at this level:
Pitching development. With the longer mound distance, this is a real inflection point for pitchers. Programs that invest in proper mechanics — not just arm strength — are setting their players up well. If your son pitches, ask coaches specifically how they develop and manage pitchers.
Coaching philosophy on physical development. Given the uneven growth spurts at this age, you want coaches who are developing all their players, not just riding the two or three kids who happen to be bigger right now. Ask how they approach players at different physical stages.
Schedule transparency. With more teams operating outside COYBL's structured calendar, the range of commitment levels at 11U is wider than at younger ages. Some programs will play 6 weekends; others will play 15. Get a realistic picture of the full schedule — including expected travel — before you commit.
Continuity into 12U. If the coaching staff plans to stay together through 12U, that matters — because 12U brings one of the signature experiences in youth baseball. More on that when we get there.
Still Kids, Still Fun
It's worth saying again: 11-year-olds are still in elementary school. The best 11U programs in Central Ohio take the game seriously without taking themselves too seriously. Winning matters more than it did at 8U, and that's fine — competition is healthy and kids this age can handle it. But the coaches who are doing it right are still prioritizing player development, team culture, and making sure their players actually want to come back next year.
If you leave a tryout feeling like you just attended a professional interview rather than a youth baseball evaluation, trust that instinct.
