12U Travel Baseball in Central Ohio

A Landmark Year

Twelve is the age that a lot of travel baseball families look back on as the highlight of their youth baseball experience. The game itself hasn't changed dramatically from 11U — same 50x70 field dimensions, same pitching distance — but what surrounds it often has. This is the age where many Central Ohio teams make their big trip: a week-long destination tournament at Cooperstown Dreams Park in upstate New York or one of the Cal Ripken Baseball facilities.

COYBL lists around 25 teams at 12U, but as with 11U, that understates the real number of area teams. Most 12U programs have shifted significantly toward tournaments and independently scheduled games, and some operate entirely outside the league structure. The options are there — you just have to look a little further to find all of them.

The Destination Trip

If there's one thing that defines 12U travel baseball across Central Ohio, it's the trip. A sizeable percentage of programs plan a weeklong destination tournament, and for most players it becomes one of their favorite baseball memories. Here's what families should know about the two most popular options:

Cooperstown Dreams Park is iconic. Teams and their coaches stay together in on-site dormitories and eat together throughout the week, which creates a genuine team bonding experience that goes well beyond baseball. Each team is guaranteed at least six games spread across the week, with plenty of downtime for activities and fun. Players and coaches receive a special uniform as part of the experience.

The cost reflects all of that. Participation runs approximately $1,300 per person for players and coaches. Families attend separately and arrange their own lodging nearby — Cooperstown and the surrounding area have plenty of options, but book early because the town fills up. One additional note: Cooperstown requires each team to supply an umpire to work the tournament, which is a responsibility coaches need to plan for. Coach fees are often shared across the team roster.

Cal Ripken Baseball facilities — including the popular complex in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee — offer a strong alternative at a lower price point. Participation at Ripken Pigeon Forge runs approximately $720 per participant. Families arrange their own travel and lodging, and the Pigeon Forge area has plenty to do for families who want to make a vacation out of it. Teams still get a guaranteed slate of games across the week in a first-class facility, on fields that offer kid-sized replicas of famous ballparks.

Neither trip is mandatory. Some programs skip the destination tournament entirely or substitute a closer regional tournament. If your family's schedule or budget makes a weeklong trip difficult, there are excellent 12U programs in Central Ohio that don't require it. Just ask the question upfront so there are no surprises.

What the Game Looks Like at 12U

Beyond the trip, 12U is a year of continued development on familiar dimensions. A few things worth noting:

The physical gap keeps widening. Some 12-year-olds look like middle schoolers; others still look like little kids. Both are completely normal, and the best coaches know how to develop players at every stage. (There's often a shocking difference between how a kid looks at tryouts in July compared to the following April.) Be cautious of programs that seem to be built around their two or three most physically advanced players — those advantages tend to even out, and the kids who were developed properly along the way are the ones who thrive at 14U and beyond.

The tournament-heavy schedule is real. Most competitive 12U programs play several weekend tournaments alongside whatever league or scheduled games they arrange. This can be the busiest travel schedule families have experienced to that point — and the destination trip adds a full week on top of it. Go in with eyes open about the time and financial commitment.

Pitching development matters more than ever. At 50 feet with improving hitters, the margin for error is getting smaller. Programs that invest in proper pitching mechanics, pitch counts, and arm care are doing right by their players. Ask any prospective coach how they manage pitcher workloads across a long season.

Choosing a 12U Program

The same fundamentals apply as at younger ages — evaluate coaching philosophy, roster size, schedule transparency, and full cost. At 12U, add one more question to the list: what is the team's plan for the destination trip, and what is the expected total cost for a family including travel and lodging?

That number can vary significantly from program to program depending on which tournament they choose and how costs are structured. Getting a realistic all-in estimate before you commit is especially important at this age.
